Understanding Pigmentation

Pigmentation occurs when excess melanin causes areas of the skin to become darker than the surrounding skin. It can present as sun damage, melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Not all skin discolouration is caused by excess pigment, however. Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE), the persistent red marks often left after acne or inflammation, has a different cause and may require a different treatment approach.

At Skin Principles, every treatment plan begins with understanding the underlying cause before recommending the most appropriate course of treatment. Depending on your skin and diagnosis, your personalised programme may include medical-grade chemical peels, carefully selected light therapy, SkinPen microneedling and a tailored home skincare routine.

Not all light therapies are suitable for pigmentation, and in some cases they can make it worse if used incorrectly. That's why every treatment is chosen with care to support your skin without triggering further pigment changes.

By combining in-clinic treatments with targeted home care, our goal is not only to improve existing pigmentation but also to help reduce the risk of it returning.
